Autism has such a wide spectrum and per the CDC (2020) effects 1 in 36 children in the US, and 1 in 45 adults, which is why I’m left wondering why there are so few films that actually address the condition. A few that immediately come to mind are Rain Man (1988), Pablo (2017), A Beautiful Mind (2001), and Temple Grandin (2010) … which we showed in Movie Group a few years back! Please Stand By is a wonderful film starring Dakota Fanning, Toni Colette, and Patton Oswald. It’s short, sweet, and to the point. Bonus points if you are a Star Trek fan, because you’ll get a lot of hidden trivia!
Per IMDB: The world is a confusing place for Wendy Welcott (Fanning), a fiercely independent and brilliant young woman with autism. Wendy longs to leave her group home and return to living with her sister's family and new baby girl. She is sure that in order to reunite with her family, all she needs to do is convince them of her newfound competence and abilities. As a lover of all things Star Trek, Wendy writes in her free time; so when she hears about a Star Trek screenplay competition, she seizes the opportunity to submit her 500-page script and prove her worth. However, her only problem: if she doesn't hand in her 500-page script to Paramount Pictures in person, she will miss the deadline. Wendy sneaks out of her group home and travels hundreds of miles outside her protective boundaries and refuses to allow anything to stop her from delivering her script.
On Thursday, May 23, we gather at 5:30pm for snacks and fellowship and then the movie starts at 6pm. You’re invited to bring a snack and/or beverage to share, along with $5 if you’d like pizza.
