At Saint Patrick Parish
It is a tradition to celebrate May Crowning with an all-school Mass and crown the statue of the Blessed Virgin Mary. A special honor is attached to being chosen to crown the statue of the Blessed Mother. At Saint Patrick Catholic School, the distinction is always bestowed upon an 8th-grade girl by a vote of the school faculty and staff, along with her attendants in the Marian Court of Honor.
Students are invited to wear their Sunday best for May Crowning, and those who have just made their First Communion may wear their First Communion outfits. Full uniforms are always a great option, too.
Students also crown the blessed Virgin Mary statue in the Grotto at Saint Patrick Catholic School; a tradition is said to date back to the 1930s but was reinstated at the school in 2020. Preschool children also crown the Blessed Virgin Mary statue in the 2nd-floor hallway outside the office.

at Holy Cross Parish
It is a tradition at Holy Cross Parish to crown Mary during Mass on the first Sunday in May.
Children who want to participate in the crowning procession should meet the Minneman family at the back of the church at 9:50 am to receive flowers and instructions. Adults are welcome to bring flowers and participate in the procession, too!

about May Crowning
May Crowning is a traditional Roman Catholic ritual held during May. It is a solemn and beautiful procession in which the Blessed Virgin Mary statue is crowned with a garland or crown of flowers, honoring Mary as"the Queen of May."
The queen symbol was attributed to Mary because she was a perfect follower of Christ, the absolute" "crown" of creation. She is the Mother of the Son of God, the messianic King. Mary is the Mother of Christ.
The faithful saw Mary's attributes in the herbs and flowers growing around them. Many flowers and herbs symbolize Mary's life, creating Marian gardens. A Mary garden is a small sacred garden enclosing a statue or shrine of the Virgin Mary. Select flowers, shrubs, and trees associated with Mary to plant.
Who doesn't love to sing a song to Mary? Many Marian hymns can be sung at a May Crowning, including Hail Holy Queen, Immaculate Mary (Ave Maria), or Hail Mary (Gentle Woman).
In 2018, the Vatican announced Pope Francis' decision to celebrate the Blessed Virgin Mary as "Mother of the Church" every year on the Monday after Pentecost. Pope Francis added the memorial to the Roman Calendar after carefully considering how devotion to the Blessed Virgin Mary under this particular title might encourage growth in "the maternal sense of the Church""
