About this Event

Please join us at the New Haven Lawn Club on May 16, 2024 at 12PM for lunch, the presentation of an award to Marta Moret '84 MPH, and a talk by Architect Andrei Harwell. His recent work has focused on the integration of buildings, infrastructure, and the natural environment at the neighborhood scale, exploring how design can connect people and their communities, contribute to economic, social and environmental resilience, and create a strong sense of identity. A three-course plated luncheon will be served. Free parking is available at the New Haven Lawn Club, which is handicap and ADA Accessible, and on the Yale Shuttle and CT Transit bus lines.

Marta Elisa Moret is president of Urban Policy Strategies, LLC, a New Haven-based consulting firm that conducts community public health research and assessment. UPS evaluates the impact of community-based interventions in areas such as HIV/AIDS, childhood health, substance abuse, cardiovascular disease, and maternal health. UPS uses evidence-based approaches to enhance the capacity of African-American, Latino, and Native American community organizations to implement successful disease prevention programs. This work has served as a model for community-academic partnerships in addressing public health issues facing underserved families and children.

Ms. Moret was also an adjunct faculty member in public health at Southern Connecticut State University. Drawing on her extensive experience in the nonprofit sector, she taught courses on US and international maternal and child health. Her courses focused on the need and challenges of systems change to reduce maternal mortality and childhood disease morbidity.

Ms. Moret was the deputy commissioner for the Connecticut Department of Social Services, vice president for programs at the Community Foundation for Greater New Haven, executive director of the Hispanic Health Council, program director at Manpower Demonstration Research Corporation, and assistant director and a fellow of the Bush Center in Child Development and Social Policy (now the Zigler Center in Child Development and Social Policy). Ms. Moret serves or has served on the boards of Women’s Health Research at Yale, Story Corp, the Campaign School at Yale, and the New Alliance Foundation. She was a member of Hispanics in Philanthropy and the Eastern Evaluation Association.

As an alumna, Ms. Moret served Yale as a member of the Yale Alumni Association’s Board of Governors. She was named to the Winslow Centennial Honor Roll for Excellence and Service to the Yale School of Public Health in 2015, received the Alexis de Tocqueville Herbert H. Pearce Award from the United Way of Greater New Haven in 2019, and was awarded the Junior Achievement of Southwest New England’s Spirit of Hope Award in 2020.

Ms. Moret earned her MPH degree from the Yale School of Public Health in 1984.

Andrei Harwell, AIA is an architect, urban designer, planner, and design educator whose practice and teaching emphasize the strategic value of architecture in responding to contemporary challenges facing American and world cities, towns and regions.  He is a Senior Critic at the Yale School of Architecture and Director of the Yale Urban Design Workshop, the School of Architecture’s community design center.

Andrei has contributed to award-winning projects ranging from the design of individual buildings and public spaces to neighborhood, downtown and regional plans.  His recent work has focused on the integration of buildings, infrastructure, and the natural environment at the neighborhood scale, exploring how design can connect people and their communities, contribute to economic, social and environmental resilience, and create a strong sense of identity.

Prior to arriving at Yale, Andrei practiced in the New York office of Hardy Holzman Pfeiffer Associates.  He holds an M.Arch from Yale and a B.Arch from Carnegie Mellon University.
