MAVtech is New Zealand's specialist museum of audio and visual technology. We showcase the machines which paved the way towards the smartphones in our pockets- as well as the 'dead ends' which tell of a forgotten future. Our collection includes cameras, radios, televisions, cinema equipment (in fact, the museum building is a 1920s cinema!), cine cameras, camcorders, recorded sound and music players.
MAVtech is hosting an Open Day highlighting rugby history- including some very rare recordings! Our volunteers will be screening original newsreels featuring rugby as well as playing some classic records featuring rugby songs and commentary from the 1950s and 1960s. But the rarest piece of music will be a song celebrating the 1924/1925 ‘Invincibles’ Tour sung with the help of our automatic player piano. We have one of the last surviving piano rolls left of this tune.
The newsreels will screen at 2pm, and the player piano roll will be played at 1:30pm and 3pm.
A great way to kick off the start of Spring! The Open Day is on Saturday the 28th of September from 1pm-4pm and admission is just $6 per adult (with supervised children under 12 free) and EFTPOS is avaliable.
MAVtech is planning more themed Open Days so stayed tuned for more details!
