Maundy Thursday commemorates the last evening Jesus spent with His disciples before His arrest and crucifixion. It marks three profound moments in His final week: the washing of His disciples' feet, the institution of the Lord’s Supper, and His new commandment to love one another.
The word Maundy comes from the Latin mandatum novum, meaning “new commandment,” referring to Jesus’ words in John 13:34: “A new commandment I give you: Love one another.” On this night, the loud hosannas of Palm Sunday have faded, and Jesus gathers His disciples for the Passover Feast—His Last Supper.
