When it first hit the stage in 1995, Matthew Bourne’s Swan Lake stunned the dance world by trading the traditional bevy of female swans for an all-male ensemble. In fact, the Prince, the Swan and the Stranger (aka the Black Swan) are all performed by men in this dramatic and witty version of the tale revolving around a young royal, his distant mother and the swan that represents the prince’s desire for freedom. And now Bourne and his team have plumped up its plumage, updating the original earth-shattering production in advance of its 2020 Kennedy Center debut.
