About this Event

Liberalism and socialism have long been understood as mortal enemies, but both developed out of the Enlightenment and are committed to the importance of reason, freedom, and flourishing for all.

In McManus makes the case for retrieving a long-forgotten tradition of liberal socialist thought. The book lays out the strengths and weaknesses of liberal socialism in the context of the tumultuous 21st century, arguing that it may be an overlooked source of hope, one deserving of reconsideration in an era of right wing populism.

Matt McManus is an Assistant Professor at Spelman College. He is a frequent contributor to Jacobin and Damage magazines and the author of The Political Theory of Liberal Socialism amongst other works.

Luke Savage is a writer and essayist whose work has appeared in The Atlantic, The New Statesman, The Washington Post, and The Guardian. Born in St John’s, Newfoundland, he studied political science, history, and philosophy at the University of Toronto, where he edited Canada’s largest student newspaper The Varsity. Having worked for several years as an investigative reporter covering Canadian politics and the far right, Luke has been a staff writer at Jacobin since 2018 – where he is a frequent commentator on American, British, and Canadian politics. He is co-host of the popular Michael and Us podcast, a twice-weekly show about politics, cinema, and our crumbling world.
