As part of Fantasia’s 30th anniversary celebrations, join us for a special artist talk between two of Canada’s most brilliant and beloved film talents.
Toronto-born actor, screenwriter, producer and director Matt Johnson blasted onto the scene with his radically distinctive independent features The Dirties (2013), which won Best Narrative Feature at the Slamdance Film Festival and had its Canadian Premiere at Fantasia, and Operation Avalanche (2016), which premiered at the Sundance Film Festival, and had its Quebec Premiere at Fantasia, in addition to the adored cult series Nirvanna the Band the Show. His third feature, the phenomenal BlackBerry (2023) premiered in competition at the 73rd Berlin International Film Festival and went on to break all Canadian Screen Awards records with 14 wins, including Best Motion Picture, Achievement in Direction and Performance in a Leading Role (comedy), becoming the most awarded film in CSA history. Johnson followed that up with the riotous NIRVANNA THE BAND THE SHOW THE MOVIE (2025), which Premiered at SXSW to enormous acclaim, leading to NEON acquiring the film. It later won the TIFF Midnight Madness People’s Choice Award. Johnson’s fifth feature, TONY (2026), will be released by A24 on August 7. Johnson acted in Kazik Radwanski’s ANNE AT 13,000 FEET (2019) and MATT AND MARA (2024) and has been a producer on numerous standout Canadian features, including Chandler Levack’s MILE END KICKS and Ethan Eng’s THERAPY DOGS. Johnson is back at Fantasia this year as a producer on Carly Balestreri’s THE TWO YEAR RULE (2026).

The film Premiered at SXSW, winning the Adam Yauch Hörnblowér Award, before going on to win the Audacity Award at Oldenburg. Her second feature, the glorious THE DEAD LOVER (2025), Premiered at Sundance to enormous acclaim and went on to play Rotterdam, SXSW and TIFF, among others. As an actor, Glowicki has appeared in a slew of acclaimed, singular works, including Albert Birney & Kentucker Audley’s STRAWBERRY MANSION (2021), which had its Canadian Premiere at Fantasia, Mary Dauterman’s BOOGER (2023), which World Premiered at Fantasia, Ben Petrie’s THE HEIRLOOM (2024) and Dusty Mancinelli & Madeleine Sims-Fewer’s HONEY BUNCH (2025), for which she won a Canadian Screen Award for Performance in a Leading Role. Glowicki returns to Fantasia this year as the star of Emily Lawson’s MAN EATING PUSSY (2026)
