Irish Flute & Guitar Duo in Kennebunk The Boston-based duo of Matt and Shannon Heaton bring their brand of Irish traditional music to the Brick Store Museum in Kennebunk, Maine, Sunday, October 19.
The Heatons present a satisfying mix of new and old tunes & songs, with engaging stage presence and masterfully crafted arrangements. They play updated traditional Irish music on flute and accordion (Shannon), and guitar and bouzouki (Matt), and complement their instrumental work with engaging vocals.
The Heatons are an integral part of Boston’s vibrant traditional music scene. Shannon’s flute playing has won her accolades from fans and journalists in the US and abroad. Since 2017 she has hosted the podcast, Irish Music Stories, where she provides listeners an inside look at the thriving global traditional music scene. She co-founded Boston’s Celtic music fest, which has provided performing opportunities for hundreds of traditional musicians and dancers. She was named Massachusetts Traditional Artist Fellow in 2016.
In addition to his work with Shannon, Matt has performed with countless other ensembles and soloists, including the Karan Casey Band, Boys of the Lough, and Robbie O’Connell. In addition to his work as an Irish accompanist on guitar and bouzouki, Matt is an active performer for children and families. He has received multiple grants and awards for his engaging singalongs and rockabilly-tinged albums.
In addition to their several recordings as a duo, Shannon recently launched a solo project, Perfect Maze. She terms the music on the album “pollinator inspired Irish/chamber folk music,”s and notes that it was “inspired by bees and butterflies.”
The Heatons’ concert will take place in the Brick Store Museum’s Dane Street Program Center, Sunday afternoon, October 19, from 3:00-5:00 p.m. The concert is part of the long-running “Concerts in West K!” series, produced by Mousam River Music in association with the museum. Admission is $20.00 per person. Advance tickets are available online at https://www.brickstoremuseum.org/calendar/ or at the door the day of the show.
