About this Event
Math is Everywhere: Young DIYers Investigate
Come join us at Highland Springs Community Center, for a fun-filled event where young DIYers will explore the world of math in a hands-on way! From measuring ingredients to building structures, we'll show how math is all around us. Let your creativity flow as you dive into exciting projects and experiments. Get ready to unleash your inner mathematician and have a blast with fellow young DIY enthusiasts. Don't miss out on this awesome opportunity to see how Math is Everywhere!
Program Overview: Math is Everywhere: Young DIYers Investigate is an enrichment workshop that teaches mathematical concepts (addition, subtraction, division, multiplication, fractions, decimals, and geometry), scientific investigation, the engineering design process, and basic life skills (home maintenance) to youth through hands-on (or kinesthetic) learning opportunities. The workshop is designed for students between the ages of 10 to 13.
In this workshop, students will gain an understanding of the role math plays in solving real-life problems such as performing basic maintenance care on your home. The students will conduct hands-on scientific investigation regarding emergency home maintenance issues. They will have to use math and the engineering design process to develop solutions to solve the problems. In addition, the students complete simulated home repair projects to test their solution, collect data, and determine if the solution solved the problem.
Learning Targets:
After this workshop, students should be able to:
- Give an example of how math is used to solve a real-world problem, such as calculating budgets, materials, performing home repairs, and building structures.
- Use and apply math skills to calculate the amount of material necessary to complete the project, measure the materials, convert the units of measurement as necessary (for example, converting inches to feet).
- Apply their knowledge of the engineering design process and geometry to build or repair structures.
- Understand and apply the use of dimensions (ratios, volume, area, and angles) to measure, cut, assemble, and install materials for home maintenance projects.
