About this Event

Session Dates & Times

Friday Afternoon’s 1:30pm - 3:30pm

(27th May, 3rd June, 10th June, 17th June, 24th June, 1st July).

You are welcome to come along to one or more sessions. Places are limited to six people at each session so early booking is recommended.

Journaling has many positive benefits for improving mental health and wellbeing. The sessions are designed to introduce you to some new journaling techniques so that you can continue your maternal journal at home in your own time. All materials will be provided along with a sketchbook for you to keep after the session. No experience is necessary and babes in arms are welcome to attend with you.

No matter how old your children or those you care for might be, having a safe space to explore the complex feelings and experiences of mothering can be healing and empowering. These workshops will allow you to express and explore your experiences in a safe environment surrounded by other mums. We will use prompts from the award winning maternal journal movement to fill pages in our individual sketchbooks. The techniques include writing, collage, painting and drawing and is suitable for all levels of experience including beginners.

Mothers and those with caring responsibilities for people of any age are welcome to attend. We regret that we cannot provide childcare at this time however babes in arms are welcome.

Maternal Journal is a global community movement providing an inclusive and safe space for anyone who has experienced pregnancy, given birth, identifies as a mother or as a woman or non-binary carer.

Spilt Milk is a social enterprise and any surplus generated from our workshop programme is reinvested into providing opportunities for mothers on low income. For each of our workshops, we provide one funded place for a mother who would not otherwise be able to afford to participate. If you would like to apply for a funded place, please get in touch.

The workshops will be facilitated by Lauren McLaughlin who is an artist, mother, curator and educator. Lauren has more than 8 years experience of delivering creative workshops to community groups as well as a Master’s degree in Applied Art & Social Practice from Queen Margaret’s University. Lauren has been delivering creative projects with local women and mothers in Edinburgh since 2017 and is passionate about the power of art to connect communities and improve wellbeing.
