Matariki Whānau Day

Come together to celebrate Matariki with free whānau-friendly activities, workshops, and activities.
Waka hourua (double-hulled voyaging canoes) are central to Māori and Pacific celestial navigation stories, and our ancestors’ journeys across Te Moana-nui-a-Kiwa (The Pacific).
Te hōtaka matua | Programme:
▪️Face paint with Matariki-inspired designs
▪️Artist and carver-led design workshop
▪️Learn about lunar phases in the Fijian environmental calendar
▪️Discover how to use a star compass to voyage across the pacific
▪️Learn about the importance of the frigate bird in Kiribati culture
▪️Complete a Te Papa taonga trail
This event will have NZSL interpretation. A full schedule, including information for Deaf whānau, will be shared soon.
