Matariki is a time for communities and whānau to come together, with a focus on caring for te taiao.To mark the public holiday, gather the whānau and celebrate Matariki with us at Te Papa.
Whānau day is for you and your tamariki to learn about our New Year and discover mātauranga through activities, workshops and storytelling.
Wellington Foyer, 10.00am – 2.00pm
• Matariki craft station: colour, paint, collage or print with Matariki-inspired images led by artist Tayla Hartemink
• Facepainting with Daizy Designs: facepainting inspired by the stars of the Matariki cluster
• Garden Bird Survey: Learn about Aotearoa’s manu/birds with fun crafts and discover how you can help with the 2024 survey
• Matariki taonga trail: Pick up one of printed trails to learn about Te Papa taonga (treasures) that link to the stars of Matariki. Start in the foyer and travel through the galleries, finishing in the Matariki hub on Rongomaraeroa.
Rongomaraeroa
• Storytelling: Listen to Qiane Matata-Sipu read her new book ‘Nanny Rinna’s Amazing Nets/ Ngā Kupenga a Nanny Rina’ – readings in both te reo Māori and English. The 1pm reading will also include NZSL interpretation
Readings start at 10.30am, 11.30am, 1pm & 1.30pm
• Weaving workshops (age 8+): Weave your own matariki star with Te Roopu Raranga o Manaia/Hikoikoi Weavers. 8 places available per workshop, sign up on the day
Workshops take place at 10.15am, 11.15am, 12.15pm & 1.15pm
• Drop-in weaving: Quick, weaving activities suitable for all ages. No booking required, take a place at one of the weaving tables located at the back of Rongomareroa.
