Settle in for an evening of candle lit yin yoga and yoga nidra as we celebrate the rising of Matariki, te Mātahi o te Tau, the Māori New Year. This sacred time invites us to reflect on the past year, celebrate the present and plant seeds for the year ahead.Matariki heralds a new beginning in the Māori lunar calendar, symbolising remembrance, renewal, and the celebration of life. The nine stars of Matariki—Matariki, Pōhutukawa, Waitī, Waitā, Waipunarangi, Tipuānuku, Tipuārangi, Ururangi, and Hiwa-i-te-Rangi—each hold unique significance, representing different aspects of nature and human experience. During our Yin Yoga practice, we will honour these celestial guides by dedicating each pose to their respective energies and stories.
Following our yin yoga practice, we will transition into yoga nidra, a guided meditation that induces deep relaxation and inner awareness. As we rest in śavāsana, you will be lead through a journey of visualisation and intention setting, aligning with the energies of the Matariki stars. This state of conscious rest creates space for healing and clarity, helping you to plant seeds of intention for the new year.
We’ll end our bliss session with a short period of silent reflection, giving you time to sip a cup of organic, herbal tea and absorb the practice and the wisdom of Matariki. You will leave feeling deeply relaxed, rejuvenated, and connected to both the cosmos and the earth, ready to embrace the new beginnings that the Maori New Year brings.
What to bring:
A cushion for behind your head if you wish, a journal or notebook + anything else to make your nest comfortable, bring your drink bottle and wear warm layers. Mats, bolsters, blocks and blankets are provided and please feel free to bring your own.
Contribution is $35 per person.
