Nau mai, haere mai ki tēnei Manu Tukutuku (Traditional Māori Kite Making) Wānanga hosted by Te Whare Tapere.
Matariki is a time for coming together, sharing kōrero, remembrance, and looking ahead to the new year. Through the making of manu tukutuku, we gather in community to learn, create, and celebrate te tau hou Māori.
Together we will spend the morning creating manu tukutuku, learning one of the many forms of Māori kite making.
Manu tukutuku hold a strong significance within te ao Māori through celebration, storytelling, communication, play, and relationships between people, whenua, and the skies above.
Traditionally, manu tukutuku were created using materials gathered from the natural environment such as harakeke, raupō, toetoe, wood, and muka. In this wānanga, we will work with a mixture of traditional and contemporary materials.
This wānanga is open to all tamariki, rangatahi, pakeke, and whānau.
All materials provided — no experience needed.
We ask that tamariki under 7 attend alongside a parent, caregiver, or whānau member who can support them during the wānanga. Please include accompanying adults within your booking numbers.
