Pukerua Bay's Matariki Celebration is back for 2024! Gold coin koha entry, rain or shine.
Nau mai, hoki mai.
Join us for this year's local Matariki Celebration. Once again, we are planning family-friendly activities, yummy kai and the starry night walk.
Check out the performances from 5-7pm at the hall, as well as local art and light displays. Te Ara Matariki will be a guided walk starting at 7pm, heading from Pukerua Bay School to Kōawa Ngaro Secret Valley.
This year’s kaupapa is Tupuānuku, the star from the Matariki cluster which is connected to Rongo-mā-Tāne, the atua of agriculture. Tupu can mean new shoot or 'to grow', Nuku is an abbreviation of Papatūānuku.

Germinate, grow and let the gardens be abundant
The event will be an opportunity to celebrate the present – gather to give thanks for what we have.
Come along to see tamariki from our local kura perform kapa haka, story-teller Linda Hansen, a book reading of Paku Manu Ariki Whakatakapōkai by author Michaela Keeble and experience light and sound scapes VJ RASKAL and Mr J.
Please explore Kōawa Ngaro Secret Valley responsibly. Bring a lantern, head-lamp or torch, wrap up warm and wear sturdy footwear. Children must be supervised at all times.
