Masters of Hawaiian Music brings together four-time Grammy Award winner George Kahumoku, Jr., known as “Hawai’i’s Renaissance Man,” six-time Grammy winner Daniel Ho and two-time Grammy winner Tia Carrere. They share uniquely Hawai’ian slack key guitar, ‘ukulele and traditional songs with audiences worldwide.
Kahumoku is a multiple Na Hōkū Hanohano Award winner, vocalist, storyteller, songwriter, author, teacher, sculptor and farmer who produces the weekly Slack Key Show on Maui, now celebrating over 20 years of featuring Hawai’i’s finest musicians. His music reflects traditions reaching back to the early 19th century when Portuguese immigrants brought the ‘ukulele and Mexican cowboys brought guitars to Hawai’i along with their ranching expertise.
Multi-instrumentalist Daniel Ho earned four of his six Grammy credits as producer of Kahumoku’s Grammy wins, showcasing his talent and versatility on ‘ukulele, slack key guitar, piano and vocals. His two other Grammy wins came with close friend Tia Carrere. International star Carrere first showcased her considerable singing and acting chops in Wayne’s World before featured roles in film and television including Lilo & Stitch and Jo Koy’s Easter Sunday. She returned to her Hawai’ian roots with Grammy Award-winning albums alongside Ho. These dynamic musicians reflect the best of traditions, musical virtuosity and sparkling compositions in performances that are “the essence of aloha.” —PopMatters
