Η Κλερ Άθερτον είναι μοντέζ ταινιών και γεννήθηκε το 1963 στο Σαν Φρανσίσκο. Γοητευμένη από την ταοϊστική φιλοσοφία και τα οπτικά ιδεογράμματα, στράφηκε αρχικά σε σπουδές κινεζικής γλώσσας και πολιτισμού, προτού εγγραφεί στον επαγγελματικό κλάδο της École Louis-Lumière στο Παρίσι. Ενδιαφερόταν ιδιαίτερα για τον ήχο και εργάστηκε επίσης ως διευθύντρια φωτογραφίας, όμως ήταν στο μοντάζ όπου βρήκε την πραγματική της καλλιτεχνική πορεία. Για αρκετά χρόνια συνεργάστηκε με το Κέντρο Οπτικοακουστικών Μέσων Simone de Beauvoir ως τεχνικός βίντεο, σε συνεργασία με τις Carole Roussopoulos και Delphine Seyrig.
Γνώρισε τη Chantal Akerman σε ένα γύρισμα το 1984. Δύο χρόνια αργότερα μοντάρισε το Letters Home, μια ταινία με τις Delphine και Coralie Seyrig. Η δουλειά αυτή αποκάλυψε μια βαθιά δημιουργική σύμπνοια και μια κοινή ευαισθησία ανάμεσα στις δύο καλλιτέχνιδες, που αναπτύχθηκε ακόμη περισσότερο με τον χρόνο μέσα από ντοκιμαντέρ, ταινίες μυθοπλασίας και εικαστικές εγκαταστάσεις. Η Atherton και η Akerman συνεργάστηκαν για περισσότερο από τριάντα χρόνια, έως την τελευταία ταινία της Akerman, No Home Movie, και την τελευταία της εγκατάσταση, Now. Σήμερα, η Atherton είναι υπεύθυνη για τη σύλληψη και τη χωρική διαμόρφωση των εγκαταστάσεων της Akerman, οι οποίες παρουσιάζονται σε εκθέσεις σε ολόκληρο τον κόσμο.
Το 2023 ήταν επιμελήτρια της έκθεσης Facing the Image, αφιερωμένης στο έργο της Chantal Akerman, στο La Virreina Centre de la Imatge στη Βαρκελώνη.

- Claire Atherton
Claire Atherton is a film editor born in 1963 in San Francisco. Attracted by Taoist philosophy and visual ideograms, she turned to studies of Chinese language and civilization, then she enrolled in the professional branch of the Ecole Louis Lumière in Paris. She was interested in sound and she also worked as a cinematographer. But it’s in the editing that she found her way. She worked for several years with the Centre audiovisuel Simone de Beauvoir, as a video technician in collaboration with Carole Roussopoulos and Delphine Seyrig.
She met Chantal Akerman on a shooting in 1984. Two years later, she edited Letters Home, a film with Delphine and Coralie Seyrig. This work revealed considerable complicity and a shared sensibility with Akerman that have increased with time through documentaries, fiction films and installations. Atherton and Akerman worked together for more than 30 years, until Akerman’s last film No Home Movie and last installation Now. Nowadays Atherton is in charge of the conception and spatialization of Akerman's installations, which are presented on the occasion of exhibitions in the entire world.
In 2023, she was the curator of Facing the Image, an exhibition of Chantal Akerman’s work, at La Virreina Centre de la Imatge in Barcelone.
Moreover, Atherton works as editor with a wide range of filmmakers and artists. She has been collaborating for several years with Eric Baudelaire on his films and installations, and more recently with Wang Bing.
In 2019, she received the Vision Award Ticinomoda from the Locarno International Film Festival for the body of her work.
