About this Event
The NC Mountains are facing an ongoing emergency that is still coming to light! Help us raise funds and supplies for the tragedy still unfolding in the North Carolina mountains! This is a ticketed event with limited space and all the proceeds go towards our fundraising efforts for our Coffee Colleagues who are in dire need in WNC.
In this class, we'll:
- Taste, talk, and discuss questions about the pours, the processing, and how the variety helps farmers contend with the challenges of climate change.
- Learn how to brew the best versions of two coffees produced by Edwin Noreña- Mariah’s competition Pink Bourbon MZ and Leon’s favorite, Castillo honey with Passion Fruit Reduction.
- Mariah will demonstrate and answer questions on her US Brewer's Cup pour that made it into the top ten in the nation this year and Leon will pour the Black Honey from the set with the same recipe.
No expertise required to learn and taste!
We started our business 14 years ago on a sleepless night in our mother’s kitchen in the NC mountains. We have family, dear friends, and colleagues throughout the mountains. And while our family got through the storm safely, folks across Western North Carolina saw an unfathomable amount of damage and loss last week. There is still no safe water, electricity, or supplies in many parts of the NC Mountains. We have friends and colleagues whose entire livelihoods have been swept away. Others have to rebuild, while even folks who still have their shops are not able to operate and their teams are out of work.
Join CC Director of Retail and US Brewers Cup Nationals Semi-Finalist, Mariah, and Co-Owner, Leon, in a special pourover session of Mariah’s Brewer’s Cup Nationals Semi-finals pourover of Pink Bourbon MZ (95 rating on Coffee Review) using her brewer’s cup recipe.
Co-owner Leon will brew the companion Black Honey with passion fruit reduction Edwin Noreña coffee. We’ll have ample time to talk about the recipes and coffees and pour and taste together!
Why these coffees for the fundraiser? Just as it was almost unimaginable for a hurricane to destroy whole towns in a mountainous region over 300 miles inland, it feels hard to fathom that climate change is threatening the extinction of Arabica coffee itself. Organizations across the world of coffee are working diligently to address this. Castillo variety is the result of such an effort, developed and selected for its resistance to one of the greatest and worsening threats to the livelihoods of coffee farmers world wide: Coffee Leaf Rust fungus, which is worsening due to the erratic and intense heat of changes in the Earth’s climate.
The set is comprised of one crop of Castillo variety processed three unique ways, each creating a completely different flavor experience. They are incredibly tasty, sweet, and complex. We sourced and presented these them as a set because it shows how Edwin Noreña masterfully works with a CLR resistant variety to add value through processing.
We greatly appreciate you joining us in these efforts while enjoying these beautiful coffees!
