Honoring Gregory Smith Jr.

This soirée also raises funds for the Gregory Smith Jr. Foundation, an organization born out of tragedy but dedicated to hope and change. On August 12, 2020, Gregory’s life was tragically cut short by a senseless act of gun violence. That evening, as Gregory prepared to join his friends for a game of basketball, he unknowingly said his final words to his mother, “I’m going, ma.” Hours later, Mrs. Smith received a call from Jackson Memorial trauma center with news that no parent should ever hear. Despite all efforts to save him, Gregory succumbed to fatal gunshot wounds to the abdomen. The perpetrators of this heinous act were never brought to justice, leaving the Smith family with an unimaginable void.

The Gregory Smith Jr. Foundation was established to honor Gregory’s memory and to combat the very violence that claimed his life. Through advocacy, education, and community engagement, the foundation aims to create a safer environment for our youth, ensuring that no other family has to endure the pain of losing a loved one to gun violence.
