About this Event
This year, we’ve decided to weave together two beautiful traditions: the Ukrainian Masnytsia and the spirited Mardi Gras. While they come from different corners of the world, both celebrate the end of winter with delicious food, playful games, colorful costumes, and the shared hope for a new beginning.
In Ukraine, this holiday is often called Kolodiy (from the word "kolodka", or "log"). Traditionally, a small wooden log would be jokingly tied to the legs of single young men as a playful "reminder" of their bachelor status. It’s a time to feast on syrnyky (cheese pancakes), varenyky (dumplings), and mlyntsi (crepes) before the Great Lent, and for young people to find their match.
In Louisiana and Spanish-speaking cultures, Mardi Gras fills the streets with parades, beads, and feathers. The tradition of wearing masks ensures that everyone—regardless of status, race, or background—can celebrate together as equals.
