Masked & Macabre: CC Goth Takeover @ Purgatory
About this Event
Calling all Covid Conscious goths! Join us at Purgatory for our first ever MGNYC takeover!
We're turning Purgatory into a one-night goth paradise, complete with curated music, creepy crafts, gothic games, vendors/a mini night market, and of course, your local CC goth community! Our DJ will be taking requests all night, so be sure to bring your song recs!
Takeover events are a way for us to take up space as Covid Conscious goths and help regular social outings feel less isolating by masking as a group. We will also be bringing Covid resources and PPE to distribute like masks, Covid tests, and info zines!

What is a Covid Conscious Takeover?
Our takeover meetups allow us an opportunity to take up space as Covid Conscious goths, in spaces that are typically not catered towards us. We know how isolating it can feel to be the only one masked up for Goth Night at your favorite bar, and we want to do everything we can to alleviate that loneliness. It’s also a wonderful way for us to support local businesses! By taking advantage of otherwise slow nights, we help bring business to our favorite local spots, all while limiting our exposure with non-CC folks.
These meetups also serve as a way for us to help distribute free Covid resources and PPE like masks, Covid tests, and info zines. :)
We are aware we cannot force every single other person to mask in the public spaces we choose for these meetups. But we find that the more of us there are masking and the more space we take up, the safer we can help each other feel. So while we understand that we cannot require other folks in public spaces to mask, we kindly ask that you do not attend this event unless you plan to wear a (provided) mask. Going out will never be 100% exposure risk free, but events like this help minimize that risk by allowing us to take space with others taking similar precautions. MGNYC is a goth social events group that plans to always prioritize + center Covid Consciousness at our events. Masking is one of the easiest ways to practice community care, and we want nothing more than to protect that community. This is how we keep each other safe, and keep our scene alive! <3
What is Masked Goths NYC?
Are you tired of going to shows and being the only one masking? Do you have difficulty engaging with your local scene because nightlife (busy bars, crowded concert venues) isn’t really your thing? Do you ever struggle to feel safe as a queer person, even when others in your scene claim to be “allies”?
Masked Goths of NYC is a social group for Covid Conscious queer goths seeking a sense of community in the NYC scene. Nobody should have to feel excluded from their subculture just because they want to keep themselves (and others) safe! We aim to create an environment where CC goths can come together and build community through accessible + Covid safe(r) events and meetups. MGNYC seeks to prioriritze trans, disabled, and nonwhite goths as we work to create spaces in a scene we often feel excluded/erased from. Masks (KN95 or better), provided and required, always.
Accessibility
High-filtration masks/respirators (KN95 or better) will be required and provided for all attendees to participate in this picnic. We are a Covid Conscious events group, and require masks at all of our events in order to keep our events accessible to our disabled + immunocompromised community members who are often disregarded when it comes to programming/events. Masking is one of the easiest ways we can all practice community care, and it takes so little to automatically make a space safer! :)
If you are feeling sick (even if you don’t think it’s COVID), have recently been exposed, or in a high-risk situation, we ask that you please stay home! This is how we keep each other safe.
This is a bar, so there will be drinks available. Since this is a CC meetup event, we request that folks keep their masks on while not drinking. Unfortunately we cannot require non MGNYC patrons of the bar to mask, so please feel free to stay home if that is too high risk for you.
There is an outdoor area with multiple picnic tables! These are great for folks who would like a drink, but do not feel comfortable unmasking to sip indoors. We will have outdoor activities as well.
Purgatory is located off the L train and the B60 + B20 busses. It has a wheelchair accessible entrance to get in the building, as well as an outdoor area. We are waiting to hear back from Purgatory about specific wheelchair specs!
