Break a sweat and buss a wine in a fun, community dance space like you're getting ready for Carnival in Trinidad and Tobago or Rio, Brazil!
About this Event

Carnival is an annual, worldwide celebration of arts and culture rooted in African Diasporic resistance and storytelling through performance and pageantry. While “playin’ mas’” (a Trinidadian expression for the art of the masquerade) has origins in the European pre-Lenten tradition, the transformation of the individual through costume, music, and movement operates from a distinctly African experience. This class provides beginning and intermediate-level instruction in Carnival Fusion Dance technique and choreography by focusing on the music and dances of the three largest and oldest Carnival celebrations in the Western Hemisphere: Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, Trinidad and Tobago, West Indies, and New Orleans, U.S.A.

About the Instructor:

Ezra Myles is a Multidisciplinary Artist, Arts Educator and Producer based in Oakland, CA. Much like his birthplace of Newark, NJ, Ezra creates and curates art experiences that bridge the gap between the shared cultural legacies of the African Diaspora. He weaves visual art, digital media, spoken word, and dance to engage and empower youth through the lens of Carnival as a multiethnic celebration of liberation, resilience, joy, and heritage. He was the co-founder and founding co-captain of Elemental Movement Dance Crew, based in Hartford, CT. Since 2015, Ezra has been one of the principal dancers and volunteer social media & marketing manager for SambaFunk! Carnaval Explosion. He has taught dance classes to youth across the Bay Area, and performed with such musical greats as Sheila E, Dwayne Wiggins, and Howard Wiley.

About MasFX Dance:

MasFX Dance represents the fusion of two concepts: “playin’ mas’”, the Trinidadian expression for participating in the annual Carnival festival, and ‘FX’, media/entertainment industry shorthand for audio and visual special effects. Through playin’ mas, we transform ourselves to embody a deep, pure, and powerful emotional connection to the African Diasporic emancipation experience. We dance to bring exuberant joy that heals generational trauma, to exude the magic of Carnival everywhere we go, whether it’s a school assembly, a street festival, or a major stage production. However, no performance can truly connect with our audience without a clear, comprehensive understanding of how to craft and design an enriching experience. This requires a diverse team of technicians and craftspeople who help plan, stage, and execute these events. With MasFX, we encourage all of our artists to think, collaborate, and create art with professionalism, passion, and purpose.
