About this Event
What is boylesque?
It draws from classic burlesque, drag, theatre, gogo dancing, and chippendale-style stripping to create a unique art form that exaggerates, eroticizes, and explodes masculine gender stereotypes.
Boylesque is not just for men: anyone of any gender can learn the skills to perform boylesque. In this all-gender class you’ll learn how to use posture and movement to evoke masculinity.
Skills covered:
- Warm-up and Stretch: Begin with a boylesque-specific warm up to get us ready to body roll and thrust
- Posture and strut: explicitly breaking down how simple changes in body placement can be read as “masculine” or “feminine” and how to use them in performance
- Tearaways, teases, and reveals: learn common ways of discarding clothing in boylesque and the difference between a tear-away reveal vs tease
- Body Rolls and Isolations: a fundamental element of boylesque
- Choreo: Apply what you’ve learned in a routine using some simple choreography
‘Masculine Movement and Boylesque’ is perfect for anyone looking to step up their performance, gain confidence as a dancer, develop a masculine stage presence, or to learn how to mess with gender through movement.
You will need to bring:
- Clothes that you can move or exercise in (no jeans please)
- A light jacket that fits your body and has a zip or button front
- A water bottle
Accessibility & inclusivity:
This workshop is held on the 2nd floor, accessible by staircase only (i.e. not wheelchair accessible).
This is a workshop for all sizes of bodies. Plus size participants are welcomed.
Low Income tickets available for people living under the poverty line or experiencing financial hardship. Please note that these are available under the honour system: no one will be asked to prove income. Limited availability, once low income tickets are sold out only standard price will be available.
Instructor:
Taught by Nolan Void, a non-binary boylesque and draglesque artist from Canada living in Melbourne, Australia. They do campy pop-culture themed strips, focusing on impersonating middle-aged men with moustaches. Combining the delightful chaos of Canadian drag with the camp of Australian boylesque, they are a charismatic performer and a patient teacher who enjoys working with people of a variety of skill levels.
