One of the most popular Disney movies of all time is capturing hearts in a whole new way: as a practically perfect musical! Based on the books by P.L. Travers and the classic Walt Disney film, Disney and Cameron Mackintosh's Mary Poppins delighted Broadway audiences for over 2,500 performances and received nominations for nine Olivier and seven Tony Awards, including Best Musical.
The jack-of-all trades, Bert, introduces us to England in 1910 and the troubled Banks family. Young Jane and Michael have sent many a nanny packing before Mary Poppins arrives on their doorstep. Using a combination of magic and common sense, she must teach the family members how to value each other again. Mary Poppins takes the children on many magical and memorable adventures, but Jane and Michael aren't the only ones upon whom she has a profound effect. Even grown-ups can learn a lesson or two from the nanny who advises that "Anything can happen if you let it."
Mary Poppins is an enchanting mixture of irresistible story, unforgettable songs, breathtaking dance numbers and astonishing stagecraft. This show is a perfect opportunity to showcase a strong, iconic female performer, as well as unique special effects and illusions.
Note: This story takes place in Edwardian London, and all characters will have appropriate accents. Many roles have been expanded or altered from the 1964 Disney film.
PRINCIPAL ROLES:
MARY POPPINS – Practically perfect in every way, Mary Poppins is the lovable, firm, and unflappable nanny that mysteriously appears to help the Banks family learn to befriend one another. Extraordinary and strange, kind but vain, Mary Poppins is a set of walking contradictions. Gb3-C6, some dance required.
BERT – The narrator and gentle chimneysweep, artist, and musician that frequents Cherry Tree Lane. He possesses the wisdom of a much older man but the imagination of a much younger one. Bert is an energetic and dazzling showman with a perpetual wink and grin. B2-F#4, strong dance and tap skills.
GEORGE BANKS – The Banks patriarch who has rather lost his way in pursuit of societal norms and conventional success. George’s traumatic childhood informs his icy connection to his current children, but he learns to confide in his family. Bb2-Eb4
WINIFRED BANKS – Unprepared for motherhood, Winifred struggles with feeling like an imposter. She is torn between her past as an actress, her goals of a model family, and the demands of her unsympathetic husband. Eventually, she learns how to support her family and also be their leader. A3-D5.
JANE BANKS – The high-spirited Banks daughter and oldest child, Jane learns to grow from a selfish and chaotic child to an empathetic young woman. She can be impulsive and impatient but is also intelligent and imaginative. Jane is 11; seeking an actress of a similar age. A3-F#5
MICHAEL BANKS – Easily the most observant occupant of Number 17 Cherry Tree Lane, Michael is the youngest Banks child. He begins as a mischievous but meticulous boy with a big mouth, and he grows to express his feelings and show compassion. Michael is 9; seeking an actor of a similar age. A3-E5
MRS. BRILL – The Banks’ housekeeper and cook. Mrs. Brill is easily flustered and high-strung, but with a warm heart and good humor. F#3-D#5
ROBERTSON AY – The Banks’ clumsy houseboy. Robertson Ay possesses a pleasant, if somewhat dry, demeanor and occasionally surprises himself with his talents. F3-G#4.
ENSEMBLE, which will serve as Londoners, Statues, Penguins, Bankers, Customers, Toys, Park-Goers, and/or Chimneysweeps. Actors in the ensemble may also be considered for the following roles:
NELEUS – A teenage statue who misses his father and is a graceful dancer.
BANK CHAIRMAN – The crabby and hot-tempered boss of the bank. C3-D4
BIRD WOMAN – The impoverished and haunting figure who spends her days outside St. Paul’s Cathedral, imploring passerby to feed the birds. Gb3-C5
MRS. CORRY – An exotic and colorful confectioner who delights in made-up words.
VALENTINE THE DOLL – A doll who comes to life to teach the Banks children an important lesson. Strong dancer.
MISS ANDREW – The austere and terrifying nanny that briefly replaces Mary Poppins. Ever the psychotic diva, Miss Andrew is an entirely humorless character, so naturally, we’re seeking an actor of considerable comedic skill. Gb3-F5
FEATURED CHIMNEYSWEEP – The strongest tapper of the chimneysweeps.
ADDITIONAL ROLES: Katie Nanna, Miss Lark, Police Officer, Admiral Boom, Park Keeper, Von Hussler, Northbrook, Annie & Fannie, Teddy Bear, Doll, Mr. Punch, Poseidon.
All ages welcome for ensemble.
