About this Event

The Duke Cancer Institute’s Mary Ann Black Memorial Lecture was created in honor of State Representative and Associate Vice President Mary Ann Black. State Rep. Black was known for extraordinary leadership, a legacy of strong partnerships and a powerful advocate for programs that benefited every citizen regardless of race, background, or financial status. She was a true pillar of the community, an inspiration, and an icon. She dedicated her career to breaking barriers, setting high standards and fighting for the needs of the Durham community and for communities across the state of North Carolina.

State Rep. Black joined the Duke Health System in 2002 and initiated numerous efforts that strengthened partnerships between the health system, local government, community leaders, faith communities, and other groups. Across Durham and the entire state of North Carolina, she had a solid reputation for her strong work ethic and ability to connect with community leaders across political lines. The enduring legacy of her work continues to ripple through the Durham community and North Carolina. She died of cancer in March 2020, but her legacy lives on in the thousands of lives touched by her work.

Mary Ann Black’s emphasis on health equity and the community of Durham underscores the mission of the Duke Cancer Institute and the DCI Community Outreach, Engagement and Equity program. Each year, individuals who embody her commitment to community outreach, education, clinical care, and health equity, are invited to present to DCI scientists, clinicians, trainees, and community members across Duke’s catchment area.
