About this Event

Marvel Age of Comics - The Mighty Avengers

The Avengers was the comic book of the 1970s. From Civil Rights to the Women's Liberation Movement, battles for the soul of America became battles between super heroes.
Writer Stan Lee and artist Jack Kirby co-created the all-star group of six super heroes in September 1963. From there, just three main writers chronicled Earth's Mightiest Heroes in that most turbulent of decades: Roy Thomas, Steve Englehart, and Jim Shooter, each with differing approaches. The Avengers quickly became the pivot around which the Marvel Universe turned. To look back through its issues is to get a crash course in '70s pop culture.
Illustrated with full-color art from this legendary run, Paul Cornell's entry in the MARVEL AGE OF COMICS series explores how the Mighty Avengers became icons during a time of immense change and upheaval.

Panel Host - Sarah Miles

Sarah L. Miles is a writer of prose and comics, a seasoned panel moderator, comics journalist and book reviewer, and works in a comics and gaming shop. She is also a competitive strongwoman, enjoys tabletop gaming and Lego building, and painting excessive amounts of Tyranids in the vain hope of one day fielding them.

Paul Cornell

Paul Cornell is a British writer. He has worked in television drama and Doctor Who fiction, being the creator of one of the Doctor's spin-off companions, Bernice Summerfield. Other British television dramas for which he has written include Robin Hood, Primeval, Casualty, Holby City and Coronation Street. Cornell has also written for a number of British comics, as well as Marvel Comics and DC Comics in the United States, and has had six original novels published.

He is one of only two people to be nominated for Hugo Awards in prose, comics and TV.

Jason Atomic

Jason Atomic is an artist, writer and curator with a life-long interest in pop/counterculture. Since 2013 he has published the underground anthology title Satanic Mojo Comix.

He was gallery manager at Orbital Comics, in London, during the time that they won the coveted Eisner ‘Spirit of Retail’ Award and was responsible for curating several popular exhibitions such as, Jack Kirby tribute show, ‘Hail To The King’, ‘Image Duplicator’ where cartoonists responded to the art of Roy Lichtenstein, a celebration of 2000AD’s 40th anniversary and more. He also chaired panel discussions, conducted interviews with creators and hosted comic themed life drawing sessions with the Art Model Collective.

With fellow creator Owen Michael Johnson in 2024 he co-founded the Oxford Comics Cult, and Zine Fair as a resource for local fans and creatives alike. They hold a monthly ‘OCCULTZ’ meet-up at The Star pub on the last Tuesday of every month as well as hosting comic fairs, talks and workshop.

Owen’s work is deeply rooted in character and a love of genre storytelling.
