Adapted from a 1909 novel by Jack London yet set in a provocatively unspecified moment in Italy's history, Martin Eden is a passionate and enthralling narrative fresco in the tradition of the greatest Italian classics. When Martin falls in love with wealthy and well-educated Elena, he is caught between his dreams of rising above his humble origins to become a writer, his love for the woman he hopes to marry and his political reawakening that leads to a conflict with her bourgeois family. Winner of the Best Actor prize at the Venice Film Festival and the Platform Prize at the Toronto International Film Festival. Italian with English subtitles. Not Rated. Running time 129 minutes.
