San Diego has a unique collection of sacred architecture with buildings by luminaries such as Irving Gill, Albert Frey, Richard Neutra, William Krisel, Robert Quigley, and Charles Moore. The lecture will examine this rich heritage and highlight some overlooked architectural gems. These significant buildings provide wonderful examples of the major architectural movements of the twentieth century.
About Mark Hargreaves:
Hargreaves came to California in 2016 from London, where he was a vicar in Notting Hill. He graduated from the University of Oxford with honors before completing a PhD at the University of Cambridge. His lifelong interest in the visual arts led him to pursue a master’s degree on the topic of Christianity and the arts at the National Gallery and Kings College in London. Since arriving in America, Mark has developed a keen interest in the vernacular architecture of California. His book, The Sacred Architecture of Irving J. Gill, is to be published in 2022.
