Meeting Location:
Arrive at Rohan Rec. Center no later than 9:00 a.m. for a departure no later than 9:15 a.m. from Rohan Recreation Center.
Notes:
Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings Historic State Park is a Florida State Park and historic site located on the former homestead of Pulitzer Prize-winning Florida author Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings.
A National Historic Landmark it is in Cross Creek Florida between Ocala and Gainesville – and only an hour away from The Villages.
The trip includes:
The park staff in period costume representing the Orange/Cracker Culture it is enchantingly evocative of old Florida orange agriculture and a cracker homestead transporting you to pre-WWII central Florida.
The park also involves a literary tradition of one of the South's most famous and loved authors whose 13 books include the Pulitzer Prize winning The Yearling (1938) as well as South Moon Under (1933) Golden Apples (1935) and Cross Creek (1942). And it inspired 5 films as well.
Next will be traditional Cracker Dining –
After our personal tour of the park we drive a minute down the road to claim our reservations at the famous The Yearling Restaurant with a 12-foot alligator and other Florida fauna gracing the dining room it serves good reasonably priced cracker style food. See menu below to confirm that there are plenty of items you would enjoy.
Schedule:
1 Depart from Rohan Regional Recreation Center no later than 9:15 am.
2. Drive 1 hour to the Park and park where the sign directs.
3. Tour the grounds with Park staff for an hour.
4. Depart for 11:30 lunch at The Yearling Restaurant (menu below).
5. At approximately 1:00 pm. You will begin your drive home to The Villages or visit nearby Micanopy – Florida’s self-proclaimed antiques capital – before heading home.
Cost: $6 per member plus $1 processing fee and $3 for parking per car paid in site.
