TALISMÁN is an evening of poetry & flamenco presented by artists Kao Ra Zen & Marisela Tapia, featuring flamenco guitarist Andrea Salcedo, saxophonist Mark Nagy, and modular synth player, Neil Jendon. Inspired by the talisman's transformational powers, Kao and Marisela weave through spoken word, live music and dance, exploring personal and universal narratives.
Marisela-Raymi Dalila Tapia is a Peruvian-American dance theater artist, choreographer, and educator with over 20 years of dance training, performance and teaching experience, specializing in Flamenco. She has presented work internationally across the U.S., Spain, Italy, Peru, Germany, and China. She holds a B.A. from Columbia College Chicago and a Master 's in Applied Linguistics from the University of Nebrija in Madrid. She has taught Spanish and cultural studies in both the U.S. and Spain.
Kenya “Kao Ra Zen” Fulton is a Chicago-based rapper, spoken word poet, multimedia performance artist, and educator. He has long been a stalwart in the Chicago Hip-Hop community, and has also expanded into performance art, experimental music, and multimedia. Kao has presented work at performances and screenings across the U.S., in Germany, and Finland. Kao earned his Associate in Fine Arts degree from Harold Washington College and would then earn his BFA from The School of the Art Institute of Chicago. He has worked as a teaching artist, leading poetry and movement classes throughout the Chicagoland area.
Andrea Salcedo is a flamenco guitarist born in Jalisco, Mexico, raised in Chicago, USA, and currently based in Madrid, Spain. She is internationally recognized as the first professional female flamenco guitarist from Mexico and has been cited by the Spanish newspaper El País as an emerging international reference in flamenco guitar. Salcedo graduated with honors from Northern Illinois University (DeKalb, IL), earning a Bachelor of Music in Classical Guitar Performance under Maestro Fareed Haque. She also holds an Associate in Arts from Morton College (Cicero, IL) and studied at the Merit School of Music in Chicago. Her flamenco studies began in Chicago with Spanish guitarist Jesús de Araceli, in residence with the flamenco company Soul & Duende, founded by dancer and choreographer Azucena Vega. She currently serves as an Artist in Residence at the Instituto Cervantes of Chicago.
Mark Nagy is a Chicago-based, genre-leaping saxophonist, electronic musician and composer. With a vast background in performing and recording in a variety of idioms, he continually questions sonic and structural boundaries as well as spatial relationships in his performances. He’s especially drawn to explore the continuum between fixed forms, notated materials and improvisation. He is expert and innovative on tenor and soprano saxophones, Eurorack modular synthesis and realizations of unconventional as well as traditional musical systems.
Neil Jendon is a versatile Chicago-based musician and sound artist. He co-founded the 90s alt-rock band Catherine but is best known for his work as a modular synth manipulator, electroacoustic performer, and key member of the improvisational ensemble Station 4.
