From film composer to photographer: Mario Schneider's street photography.
Mario Schneider has made a name for himself as a director and film composer far beyond the borders of Germany. In his photobook, New York Short Stories, which features both color and black-and-white images, he impressively demonstrates that street photography is also one of his talents. Mario Schneider’s photographs reflect the perspective of a filmmaker and storyteller. In his images, he presents a different, quieter New York, where the hustle and bustle of the city recedes and interpersonal encounters come to the fore. Against the backdrop of this breathtaking city, Schneider captures moments that last only a fraction of a second. These are moments that reveal the souls and emotions of the people depicted and invite us to meditate on our own feelings and thoughts about the moment captured.

Mario Schneider is a German director, author, and photographer. He spent his childhood and youth in socialist East Germany. After the fall of the Berlin Wall, he studied composition and piano. In search of his artistic identity, his work as a film composer led him to film and photography. His award-winning documentaries are internationally renowned. Following his first photo book, “Tourist,” in which he explored the essence of being a tourist, his new book focuses on street life in New York.

Sergio Purtell is a photographer and master printer whose Brooklyn-based photography printing business Black and White on White has printed work for museums, galleries, and a wide range of notable photographers - people like Robert Adams, Larry Clark, LaToya Ruby Frazier, Jim Goldberg, and Mark Steinmetz. Purtell arrived in the USA in the early 1970s, having fled an imminent dictatorship in Chile, by General Augusto Pinochet. Made between 1977 and the early-90s Sergio Purtell’s American photographs are imprints of life in a country fixated on its duelling myths of emancipation and conquest. Stanley Barker Publishing has just released two of his photo books, Love's Labour and Moral Minority.
