——— MARIKA HACKMAN (UK)
On False Dogs, Marika Hackman’s fifth album, she explores the emotions of reaching life milestones, confronting grief and understanding the passage of time. Written, produced and arranged by Marika herself, the record reflects on the dreams and beliefs of childhood, the anxieties of her mid-thirties and the expectations placed on us as we grow older. Almost entirely acoustic, False Dogs combines intricate arrangements, immediate drums, syncopated mandolins, urgent pianos and vast orchestral passages with intimate vocals.
Hackman developed its sound through experimentation at her East London studio before finalising the production during a ten-day stay at Ramsgate’s Big Jelly Studios, alongside previous collaborator Charlie Andrew and her wife, Polly Mackey, aka Art School Girlfriend. Moving beyond conventional song structures, the album balances personal reflections on grief and mortality, particularly on “Hello Sunshine”, with moments of hope and beauty in everyday life. Made on instinct, False Dogs marks a new sense of creative freedom for Hackman, who approaches the passage of time with relative stillness rather than chaos.
