Witness one of New Orleans' most authentic cultural traditions! On Super Sunday, the city's Mardi Gras Indian tribes put on their magnificent hand-sewn suits and strut through the streets in a spectacular display of folk art, dance, and ancestral pride.**Date & Time:** Sunday, March 15, 2026 at 12:00 PM
**Location:** A.L. Davis Park, Washington Avenue & LaSalle Street, Central City
**Uptown Super Sunday Route:**
• Begins at noon in A.L. Davis Park
• Starts on LaSalle Street
• Left at Martin Luther King Blvd.
• Left at South Claiborne Avenue
• Left at Washington Avenue
• Ends back at A.L. Davis Park
**What to Expect:**
About 50 Mardi Gras Indian tribes, led by their Big Chiefs, perform colorful dances, call-and-response chants, and traditional rituals. Each tribe tries to outdo the other in a friendly competition of artistry and showmanship.
**About the Suits:**
• Entirely hand-sewn with no machines
• Feature brightly-colored feathers, beads, sequins, and rhinestones
• Can weigh up to 150 pounds
• Big Chief's headdress alone may weigh 50-75 pounds
• Each suit takes 6 months to a year to create
• New suits are made each year
**Historical Significance:**
The Mardi Gras Indians' origins date back to antebellum times when escaped slaves found safe haven among Native American tribes. They honor this connection through elaborate costumes paying homage to their Native American comrades. The tradition of masking on the Sunday closest to St. Joseph's Day (March 19) dates back over a century.
