Marc Edwards/Bobby Zankel Duo:
Marc Edwards (born July 23, 1949) is a free jazz drummer who has played and recorded with artists such as Cecil Taylor, Charles Gayle, and David S. Ware. His influences include Charlie Parker and Buddy Rich. His current project is Marc Edwards Slipstream Time Travel, an afrofuturistic free jazz ensemble. Many of his solo works have a science fiction theme. He has also plays in the band Cellular Chaos, his first foray into rock drumming.
In the early 70’s, he played at Sam Rivers’ Studio Rivbea beginning long association with David S. Ware. He performed & recorded with Cecil Taylor including a 20 piece ensemble performance at Carnegie Hall in 1975 and “A Rat’s Mass” by Adrienne Kennedy at LaMa Theater 1976
In 1994. Edwards returned to music after a lengthy hiatus. He formed Slipstream Time Travel and released their first record, Time and Space Vol. 1. Additional performing and recording associations include Daniel Carter, Matthew Shipp, Rob Brown, Fred Hopkins, Peter Mazzetti, Sabir Mateen, Hilliard Greene, Tor Snyder, Ras Moshe, and James Duncan.
Bobby Zankel:
The Brooklyn-born composer/saxophonist first began attracting attention in the early 70s for his work with Cecil Taylor’s Unit Core Ensemble (Downbeat 9/71) as a skillful young altoist with a powerful music at his fingertips. His underground reputation grew on the New York Loft Scene, where he performed with the likes of Ray Anderson, William Parker, and Sunny Murray and where he continued his apprenticeship with Taylor. Zankel became a Philadelphian in 1975 to raise his family and to expand his artistic vision without heed to commercialism or the trends of the times. Since 1975, his performances as a sideman have ranged from the Hank Mobley/Sonny Gillette Quintet, to Jymmie Merritt’s Forerunners, to the Dells, NRBQ, Odean Pope’s Saxophone Choir, Ruth Naomi Floyd, and European work with Taylor. Zankel’s intensive studies of tonality and rhythms with Maestro Dennis Sandole have lead to his development into one of the most brilliant and original composers of the 90s [which continues into the 21st century]. His alto playing has been described as a unique amalgam of the precision and rhythmic intricacy of be-bop, with the soul and drive of hard bop, and the fire, spirituality, creativity and intensity of the avant-garde.” – New Music Philadelphia
Toned:
TONED pits the fiercely analog, animalistic saxophone of Tom Weeks against the crushing digital precision of Nathan Corder’s eminently mutable networks, alongside the poly directional structures of Leo Suarez’s approach to percussion, all while maintaining a driving, rock-hard musical synthesis – following in the tradition of Roscoe Mitchell’s encounters with George Lewis’ Voyager, Bay Area legends The Hub and Possessed, and the brutally technical compositions of Disgorge. The trio’s decentralized locale, between Oakland and Philadelphia, is reflected in the nonlinear and non-hierarchical processes that construct the band’s recent self-titled release.
