Marbling is a wonderful blend of monotype printing, repeat pattern development, and color play! In this three-day workshop students will learn the fundamentals of marbling on both paper and fabric, including how to select materials and manipulate the chemistry of the marbling vat. We’ll discuss the history behind the craft, beginning with Japanese suminagashi and progressing through Turkish and European patterns. Recipes for sumi ink, watercolor paints, and acrylic paints will be shared, as well as troubleshooting advice and advanced techniques. After students have familiarized themselves with the tools and methods for creating permanent prints, they’ll be free to develop their own collection of patterns! Previous experience is not required. Each student will have their own16x20” marbling tray, and we’ll share larger trays measuring {Please insert scarf tray dimensions here}. Materials will be provided, but students are welcome to bring paper and fabric or scarves they wish to experiment with. Natural fiber fabrics such as silk, cotton, or linen and medium weight drawing papers are good options for marbling. Please thoroughly prewash all fabrics without fabric softener. Students who are traveling may wish to bring a portfolio, cardboard sleeve, or tube to carry their 13x19” marbled papers home in.
