About this Event

As part of MacEwan University's Consent Action Week, join us for Mapping the Manosphere: The Cultural Politics of Masculinity in the Digital Age, a lecture by Dr. Jordan Foster, Assistant Professor of Sociology at MacEwan University.

Considerable and important attention now surrounds the manosphere: a disparate collection of online communities connected through shared cultural grievances, interests, and influential figures. From beauty and fitness to dating advice, concerns around feminism, politics and peptides, the manosphere has become an influential space through which many young men and boys encounter ideas about masculinity, identity, relationships, and social change. How do we make sense of the manosphere and its cultural, social, and political significance?

This talk maps the contours of the manosphere with a critical eye toward both its diversity and its continuities. Rather than treating the manosphere as a single unified movement, the presentation explores the overlapping communities, cultural logics, and key figures that connect its various formations. In doing so, this talk highlights the historical and cultural foundations upon which the manosphere has emerged, including longstanding anxieties surrounding masculinity, gender relations, and social change. It examines how online platforms have enabled these ideas to circulate, adapt, and attract new audiences, while considering the ways in which narratives of grievance, victimhood, and belonging shape contemporary understandings of gender and power.

Doors open at 4:30 PM, lecture starts at 5:00 PM, followed by Q&A. Come early to settle into your seat and grab drink and snacks from Always Coffee Co.

Tickets for this event are on a sliding scale from $0 to $10, with all proceeds going to the Sexual Assault Centre of Edmonton.
