- What are all the different map symbols
- Using grid references help you to find places
- What is scale and how to measure distance
- How hills and mountains are shown on a map as contours
- Studying a map to interpret the landscape
- Using a compass and walking on a bearing
- Some advanced map reading techniques
- Planning a walk using a route card
- Essential equipment for walking
Our Map Reading Made Easy course is suitable for anyone who wants to understand how to read a map and plan a walking route to enjoy the local countryside.
What will be covered on the course?
- What are all the different map symbols
- Using grid references help you to find places
- What is scale and how to measure distance
- How hills and mountains are shown on a map as contours
- Studying a map to interpret the landscape
- Using a compass and walking on a bearing
- Some advanced map reading techniques
- Planning a walk using a route card
- Essential equipment for walking
By the end for the course learners will be able to:
- Understand an ordnance survey map
- Find places using grid references
- Demonstrate basic use of a compass
- Plan a walk and complete a route card
- Describe some advanced map reading techniques
- List what to wear and take on a walk
Resource required by attendees
- You will need a pen and paper. All other equipment will be provided but if you have a ruler, a compass, an OS Explorer Map 270 Sherwood Forest, a calculator or phone calculator, and a magnifying glass, please bring them along.

To secure your place on the course BOTH the following must be done:
- Complete the EVENTBRITE BOOKING.
- Complete our INSPIRE ONLINE ENROLMENT FORM for each person attending the course.
You should be redirected to the Inspire Online Enrolment Form after completing the Eventbrite booking. If you are not redirected, please use the link supplied in the Eventbrite booking confirmation email.
To book and enrol on one of our courses, you must have been living in England and have been resident in the UK for the past 3 years.
Some exceptions may apply if you are living in England with evidence of the right to remain and are from an EEU/EEAU country (completion of a questionnaire will be required).
As we no longer receive funding for our ESFA-funded courses for learners living in the devolved areas listed below, full cost fees would apply to these courses if you live in these areas:
