Honoring Tolstoy’s pacifism and faith in the power of art to unite humanity
About this Event

In addition to being one of the world's greatest writers, Leo Tolstoy was a fearless pacifist and believer in the power of art to unite humanity. On the 4th anniversary of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, this event invokes Tolstoy's opposition to expansionism and violence and his belief in music's transformative power through readings, dramatizations and performances of musical works important to Tolstoy, including J. S. Bach, Mozart, Beethoven, Field, Chopin, Lysenko, Tchaikovsky,Scriabin, as well as later masters inspired by his writing including Rachmaninov, and a world premiere by Stefania de Kenessey.
