Ethnomusicologist Dr. Bernard Ellorin presents a Beginning Hands-on Workshop on the Music of the Sulu Archipelago
About this Event

Manilatown Ancestral  is back at the I-Hotel with a special hands-on intensive on the music of the Sulu Archipelago!

Manilatown Ancestral is the Manilatown Heritage Foundation's pre-colonial Philippine music, movement and cultural education program taking place at San Francisco’s International Hotel Manilatown Center. Each of our family-friendly workshops focus on a new topic, are oftentimes hands-on, and are accessible to all ages and levels of ability.

On Saturday, March 11th we are thrilled to have back guest teacher Ethnomusicologist Dr. Bernard Ellorin as he leads an introductory workshop on tagunggu' (gong-chime ensemble) music from the Sulu archipelago, Philippines. This is a hands-on intensive with the basic timekeeping and rhythmic patterns for the larger gong and drum instruments. Exposure to fieldwork footage will provide context to the musical repertoire.
