Booms, busts, cattle, culture, forts, fortunes, tribal lands, trains, and traditions--Mandan is where the West begins. But when did Mandan's story begin?Travel back to the late 1800s with the Mandan Historical Society during this presentation which will feature artifacts, images and stories that provide insight and context to a city that's been defined by its location on the edge.
This presentation will also celebrate Mandan's 144th Anniversary (incorporated on February 24, 1881)! All ages are welcome.
If you are unable to attend event, stop in to MMPL and look at the display in our hallway with historic ephemera from the Mandan Historical Society.
“Someone must have told me about the Missouri River at Bismarck, North Dakota, or I must have read about it. In either case, I hadn’t paid attention. I came on it in amazement. Here is where the map should fold. Here is the boundary between east and west. On the Bismarck side it is eastern landscape, eastern grass, with the look and smell of eastern America. Across the Missouri on the Mandan side, it is pure west, with brown grass and water scorings and small outcrops. The two sides of the river might well be a thousand miles apart.”
― John Steinbeck, 'Travels With Charley: In Search of America'
