British Youth Music Theatre (BYMT) is the leading musical theatre company for young people. We work across the UK and Ireland with West End professionals to offer unique opportunities and high-quality training to young people. Since 2003 we have trained over 8,000 young people, many of whom have successfully entered the creative industries such as Ed Sheeran, Sam Smith, Lauren Samuels, Charlotte Ritchie, Jack Bence, Lucy Griffiths, Luke McCall, Bradley Jaden and many more!

Each year we offer opportunities to talented young musicians (aged 11-21), who play ANY instrument to a grade 7 standard and above, to play in a pit-band, on-stage band or as an actor-musician! You'll work with a professional team to create a brand new show on one of our summer residential productions.

About the Audition

Auditions last around 15 minutes and are run by a musical director. We ask you to prepare two contrasting pieces of music around two minutes in length that best demonstrate your abilities. You may also be asked to sight-read a short piece of music (depending on what instrument you play). The MD will then talk about your musical interests to see which project will best suit you.

Joining BYMT Company

Once you have successfully joined the BYMT Musician Pool, as requirements develop for each of the summer productions, you will be invited to join a specific BYMT company. You’ll be placed on a residential project, between 1 and 2 weeks long, to create a brand new piece of music theatre. BYMT projects take place in July/August across the UK and the selection process is not based on geography, so you may not be placed on the course closest to where you live - you may be working in London, Aberdeen, Plymouth, Belfast or somewhere else! As we gather the requirements for each show, musicians will be chosen from the pool.
