Man in the Box is a performance collaboration of Tom Brady (@satori.tom), Monica Newsam (@monicanewsam, @newsamaerialdance), and Zlatko Cosic (@zlatko.cosic). Brady, Newsam, and Cosic join to stunning effect as Brady and Newsam perform together moving through a forest of eighteen 15-foot poles set to Brady's original music. Audience is immersed in the vision as catalyst. The juxtaposition of the sculptural stage space, light and shadow, original soundtrack, and innovative movement vocabulary create a transformative, visceral response. Man in the Box as performed in 2024 represents a culmination of personal journey, artistic growth, and new evolution. Brady's original sound score and stage as sculpture weaves movement and video as a classical painter to stunning effect. He is patient with the process often taking decades to reach the goal of a mature work. #satoriartssc #performanceart #choreography #aerialdance #electronicmusic #videoart #lightingdesign #projectionmapping

The journey for Man in the Box began with an original performance by Brady first staged in 1979 under the title Boxes at Franklin Furnace in New York as a reaction to the great and vexing social situations and dilemmas of the era. It has evolved over time into a meditation that invites the audience to witness the narrative of a man on the edge between living and dying, wrestling with his former/younger self—played by artist, performer and choreographer Monica Newsam—who he attempts to understand, accommodate and possess as what has been lost over time becomes clear. Later performances include the Three Sinks Gallery, St. Louis in 2003; Satori Arts, St. Louis in 2011; Links Hall, Chicago in 2017; odc Theatre, San Francisco in 2019; and a performance here at Satori Arts, Santa Cruz in January of 2024.
Each performance creates an opportunity to push the work: To evolve the thinking that drives the movements and images. Brady's approach to stage as sculpture creates physically challenging environments that demand movement-invention. In the current deeply complex evolution of Man in the Box, Brady, choreographer/dancer/aerial artist Monica Newsam, and video artist Zlatko Cosic collaborate to stunning effect.

Tom Brady (instagram.com/satori.tom) began his incursion into performance as art in 1970 while examining the limits of sculpture and performance at both Kansas (BFA) and Rutgers Universities (MFA). A significant accomplishment in Satori Arts’ previous city of St. Louis was a massive 3-stage/act performance entitled Prodigal performed September 2009 at the Shakespeare Glen, Forest Park. He has performed in New York at Franklin Furnace as well as PS1 Contemporary Arts Center, the Generative Arts Conference in Milano, Italy and in St. Louis at COCA' s Anheuser Busch Black Box Theatre, Laumeier Sculpture Park, and at his studio, Satori Arts. Brady's work has been featured in the St. Louis Post Dispatch, Sauce Magazine, West End Word, Riverfront Times, and the Webster/Kirkwood Times. He received a Whitaker Foundation Grant to partially fund the production of Prodigal. In 2019 Brady established ANNONYArts, and in 2022 he opened Satori Arts in Santa Cruz as a performance venue. He is currently developing “Beneath the Surface,” looking at current geo/political crises. Brady, at 77, continues to evolve as a prolific composer, designer, sculptor, photographer, choreographer and performer. He conceives, designs, builds, and musically accompanies the installations in which he places himself and others– creating magical images and reflections on the state of being. He is forever grateful to Monica Newsam for her 10+ year collaboration– artist, choreographer, aerialist, and dancer– matching commitment to the work. Brady opened Satori Arts in Santa Cruz in 2021, producing new works while coproducing alternative pieces by diverse local and international artists whose work challenges, innovates, and speaks to the human experience.
Monica Newsam (instagram.com/monicanewsam), president of NEWSAM AERIAL DANCE (instagram.com/newsamaerialdance), discovered at age five her passion for movement and dance, marking the beginning of a lifelong journey to define her singular artistic vision. Born in Panama, she explores her vision of dance, assembling an international body of work. Her performances and choreography stretch four continents– from North America and South America to Europe and Asia. She received her BFA at the National School of Dance and Folklore in Havana and continued her exploration of international movement styles in India. She received a Post-Graduate Diploma in Indian Classical Dance at Shriram Bharatiya Kala Kendra and Yoga at the Sivananda Yoga Center of Kerala. She has taught ballet and dance at the International American/French schools. In Havana, she performed professionally with the Cuban dance company Retazos. As professor at the University of Panama, she performed extensively in central and South America. In 1999, she co-founded Gramo Danse Company, taking dance to the community. She received a Masters Degree in Education at LIndenwood University in 2003. Currently she teaches aerial dance and choreographs for the Dance Ensembles at Webster University. She has performed in France, Italy, India, Ecuador, Salvador, Cuba, Bahamas and here in the US. She also works as an independent choreographer and performer with local companies and as a member of ANNONYArts.
Zlatko Cosic (instagram.com/zlatko.cosic) is a video artist born in Banja Luka, Yugoslavia, whose work spans a number of disciplines including short films, video installations, theater projections, and live audio-visual performances. Ćosić’s experience as a refugee influenced and shaped the content of his early artistic practice. His work began with the challenges of immigration and shifting identities, evolving to socio-political issues related to injustice, consumerism, and climate crisis. His work has been included in video art exhibitions, film festivals, galleries, and museums in more than fifty countries. He has received grants and fellowships including the Regional Arts Commission Artist Fellowship and a Kranzberg Grant for a video installation, Harmony in 3, at Laumeier Sculpture Park. His video Horizons was a prize winner at St. Louis Filmmakers Showcase, Macon Film Festival, and Sunscreen Film Festival. His video Elans won the Pulitzer’s Film Competition in St. Louis and it was a finalist at the Digital Graffiti festival in Florida. His video Spaces was screened in numerous film festivals in North America and Europe and won an award at the St. Louis International Film Festival. Cosic's video Story 1: Scenes 1-9 won Best Experimental Film at the 2017 St. Louis Filmmakers Showcase. Cosic's solo exhibition Still Adjusting at Gallery 210 was reviewed in the June 2014 issue of Art in America. Cosic's artwork has been exhibited at the Contemporary Art Museum, Kemper Art Museum, Regional Arts Commission, Gallery 210, Sheldon Art Galleries, Bruno David Gallery and Laumeier Sculpture Park, all in St. Louis; Project 4 Gallery, Washington DC; Hunter Time Square Gallery, NYC; PUBLIC Gallery, Louisville; Kulturprojekte, Berlin; Atelje 26, Belgrade, Serbia; Academy of Fine Arts, Sarajevo, Bosnia and Herzegovina; Patarei "The Battery" Prison, Estonia; and neo:gallery 23, Bolton, UK.

Satori Arts fosters research in the arts of the stage as sculpture / performance / movement, connecting artists, opening opportunities for professional growth in a unique environment for the creation and exploration in all its related art forms, and transcending age, ethnicities, orientations, experience, social, religious, and cultural backgrounds. Within minutes of stunning seascapes, waves crashing against the bluff, and seagulls soaring, Satori Arts seeks to engage audiences, challenge norms, and open new avenues to understanding, while making comments on the state of being. The resulting form is driven by the content while reshaping and expanding performative, movement-based art vocabulary.
