Donna (Meryl Streep), an independent hotelier in the Greek islands, is preparing for her daughter’s wedding with the help of two old friends. Meanwhile Sophie (Amanda Seyfried), the spirited bride, has a plan. She secretly invites three men from her mother’s past, all of whom might be her biological father: Sam (Pierce Brosnan), an Irish architect; Harry (Colin Firth), a British banker; and Bill (Stellan Skarsgård), a Swedish sailor and travel writer. Will one of these three possibilities step up and fulfill Sophie’s dream of having her dad escort her down the aisle?
Oh we should probably also mention that it’s a jukebox musical based on the songs of Swedish pop supergroup ABBA. So don’t come in expecting a dour, weepy Merchant Ivory affair; Mamma Mia! is a campy, bombastic delight that critic Mark Kermode described (lovingly) as “the closest you get to seeing A-list actors doing drunken karaoke.” Sure, maybe Brosnan’s not gonna be winning a Grammy any time soon, but it’s not a so-bad-it’s-good ironic laugh-riot. It’s simply that most movies don’t know how to have a good time, and Mamma Mia! unabashedly does. It’s a little bit shambolic, a lot absurd, and 100% a blast.
Mamma Mia! is a special selection by Tampa Theatre donor Jim Porter of Akerman LLP, who bid on – and won – the opportunity to “Pick A Classic” during our WineFest fundraiser auction in March.
