Mamele (little mother) stars acting phenomenon Molly Picon, “Queen of the Yiddish Musical”, as a daughter holding her family together after the death of her mother. Her father is off playing cards, and her brother is either running from the law or to the ladies. Mamele is so busy helping everyone else that she almost fails to notice the attractive violinist across the courtyard. Embracing the entire gamut of interwar Jewish life in Lodz, Poland, this musical comedy is a sparkling mixture of humor, song and pathos. (1938, 97 mins)
