Join Alberta-based singer-songwriters Mallory Chipman & Cynthia Hamar with Ottawa's own Dan Kelly for an intimate night of live music at LIVE On Elgin. Doors at 7pm, music at 7:30pm, tickets $15 in advance and $20 at the door.
Fresh off the heels of her fifth studio album release, Mallory Chipman’s signature brand of “cinematic folk-rock” is making waves in the Canadian roots scene. Her latest record, Songs to a Wild God, hit #1 on CKUA upon its release and was one of the only indie albums to debut in the National Radio Top 50. Songs to a Wild God displays Mallory’s vivid lyricism and acrobatic vocals atop a deft and dynamic rhythm section, and “places her amidst the longer tradition of the great singer-songwriters” (Americana UK). In the past year alone, Chipman has toured across Canada, Europe, and Asia, turning heads at major showcases and drawing comparison to Alison Krauss, Kate Bush, and Joni Mitchell. With her skillful balance of grit and grace; of contemporary protest songs and bare confessionals, Mallory Chipman powerfully embodies a rare and striking duality that leaves audiences wordless in wonderment.
Dan Kelly is an indie/folk musician from Ottawa Ontario. His sound is best described as wandering through a sun-dappled forest, where the echoes of acoustic guitars mingle with the whispering winds and the rustle of leaves underfoot. It’s a genre that invites you to sit around a crackling campfire under a star-studded sky, sharing stories of love, loss, and the raw essence of human experience. Creating a captivating experience for listeners. Having played several shows throughout the years. Including the Tim Hortons Ottawa Dragon Boat Festival. Opening for esteemed Canadian artists such as The Blue Stones, Twin Flames, and Billy Raffoul. He has also taken his show on the road to numerous provinces. He has self recorded two captivating EPs, a collection of singles, and a full length live album. These days Dan performs in a five piece band with a sound that is forever evolving.
Metis singer-songwriter Cynthia Hamar was born in Drayton Valley and raised in the small mining town of Entwistle, west of Edmonton, where she took to the stage for the first time at age 7, singing Amy Grant songs to accompaniment tracks in the local church. With four older music-loving siblings to guide her, Hamar delved into the world of music with both feet, picking up the guitar as a teenager. She moved to B.C. with her husband and raised three children, recording “Fairytale” in 2007, “Acous.tical.ly” in 2010, and eventually “The Son & I” in 2016 with her eldest son Zadok Hamar. Her fourth album, “Joint & Marrow,” released in the fall of 2022, was a career-defining collection of rich and soulful Americana. The seven songs reflected her growth as a singer-songwriter, veering from the catchy pop-folk to piano-driven ragtime romps and light reggae touches. These songs were rife with hard-learned life lessons, but the album’s closing gospel-tinged song, “Little Bird,” brings it all together with the repeated line, “Let there be joy in the journey.” Hamar’s upcoming album, “The Wind The Wood,” promises to be a pivotal moment in her career, set to begin rollout in Spring 2025. Stay tuned for many tasty surprises.
