ABOUT THE FILM
There is nothing ordinary about malleefowl.
Rarely seen or heard, these enigmatic birds live in some of Australia's most unforgiving landscapes. They don't sit on their eggs or raise their chicks. Instead, they construct enormous mounds from sand and leaf litter, relying on the heat generated within the mound to incubate their young.
For countless generations, malleefowl have shaped Australia's mallee landscapes through this extraordinary cycle of mound-building, egg-laying and birth. But today their future is increasingly uncertain as habitat loss, introduced predators and large-scale bushfires place growing pressure on populations across southern Australia.
Produced in partnership with Remember The Wild, Malleefowl - The most unlikely of birds follows the scientists, conservationists and volunteers of the National Malleefowl Recovery Group as they work to better understand, protect and reconnect malleefowl populations across fragmented landscapes. Through stunning cinematography and intimate storytelling, the film offers a rare glimpse into the secretive world of this iconic bird and the people committed to its survival.
