Welcome to the Malden Reads Opening Celebration! Join us at Bread of Life (Malden) for a fantastic kickoff event filled with fun, food, learning and community spirit. This in-person gathering will mark the beginning of an exciting journey through literature and shared experiences. Come meet fellow book lovers, enjoy engaging activities, and discover what this year's Malden Reads program has in store for you. Don't miss out on this special occasion!

This year’s community read selection is The Boy Who Harnessed the Wind by William Kamkwamba and Bryan Mealer. Set in drought-stricken Malawi, this inspiring true story follows a young boy who, despite incredible obstacles, used his ingenuity to bring electricity and water to his village. Through his determination and resourcefulness, William Kamkwamba harnessed the power of wind energy to create life-changing solutions for his community.

We are proud to partner with Bread of Life, a vital food security organization that provides over 1.5 million pounds of free food annually to families, individuals, youth, and seniors in the metro-Boston north area.

At this kickoff event, local groups will showcase how they’re using resources to foster sustainability and innovation within our community.

Malden Reads is a community reading program that seeks to answer the question, “What if all of Malden reads the same book?” Organized by community groups, city leaders, and residents, in collaboration with the Malden Public Library and UMA (Urban Media Arts), the program invites the community of Malden to read the same book and participate in a series of events related to the book’s themes. The goals of the program are to promote literacy, a love of reading, an appreciation of city resources, and most of all, to build community in the city of Malden.
