A terrarium is a simple but magical creation: it refers to any container—sealable or open-air—that contains soil and plants that can be maintenanced over time to help the plants flourish. In this workshop, instructor Jayton Howard (Horticulture Section Leader, West Section) will unearth the history of terrariums, including the story behind the first credited terrarium, which started as an accidental experiment in the 1800s. You’ll have the opportunity to get your hands dirty as you make your own magical mini-garden in a small jar. You’ll learn everything you need to know about how to care for your terrarium at home.Fees: Member $42, Non-Member $50

ABOUT THE INSTRUCTOR:
Jayton Howard grew up in Oregon working at his mother’s flower shop, had the privilege of studying horticulture in Australia where he also managed a garden shop for 5 years, then moved to Hawaii to specialize in tropical growing where he managed wholesale nursery operations as well as a cacao and coffee farm. Now he is here in Richmond at Lewis Ginter Botanical Garden as the Horticulture Section Lead, West Section where he gets to keep the tropical lifestyle alive.
