In this workshop, students will receive first-hand knowledge on how to safely make lake pigments using plant dyes and mineral salts. Participants will leave with the skills needed to experiment with this unique method of making paints on their own time. This class marries art and science in a truly awesome way!
What are lake pigments? For anyone who has painted with tube watercolors, you have undoubtedly seen a few colors labeled as “lakes.” Lake pigments are the result of an incredible chemical reaction between a dye and two mineral salts – in this case, alum and washing soda. In this workshop, students will learn how to make their own lake pigments from plant dyes in a safe way. We will then explore how to make watercolor binder and mull lake pigments into watercolor paints, which you will get to take home. If you love art, science, and getting crafty with your painting practice, this class is for you!
Artist Bio:
Avalon Paradea was raised in Waikōloa Village, where she continues to reside. She has considered herself an ʻāina-based artist since 2015, first experimenting with plant-based dyes and inks. In 2017, she became a haumāna of kapa (Hawaiian barkcloth). She deeply enjoys hand-mulling paints from tenderly collected soils, using these and plant dyes to decorate her kapa creations. With a background in anthropology, ethnobotany, and environmental conservation, Avalon seeks to find the unique liminal space where we can visually express ourselves with earth materials in a conscious, intentional manner. She has been passing this love to others through workshops since 2018.
